Visible landmarks on the map

Unfortunately, no high resolution imagery is easily available for this area. But a few sites are recognizable.

A. Tres Marias Inlet and Islands

1.   Right-click on this link and open in a new window the view of Palompon - resize it and move it to right half of your screen

2.   Select satellite view and zoom in or out  if necessary until you see the three small islands to the left of and below (west and south of) the town marker. The map will be about 3 or 4 miles square and the pattern of streets in the town should be visible if the scale size is correct.

3.   You have located the Tres Marias group, and the coral reef which surrounds it.

This area is now an ecological preserve, the dream made reality by visionary Mayor Ramon Oņate and his administration. Surface photo tours are available, and well worth the time and small expense. Scuba diving is possible in shallow to deeper waters along the coral reef.

B.  WWII Sites

Zoom out to about double the previous size and move the town marker to the lower left of the screen. The hills on the right  (east) which hold some clouds contain many WWII sites where the occupying army were dug in during their last attempt to remain on Leyte. Many skirmishes were fought here, and much courage was displayed by the citizens and their liberators. Much of the action is documented on the Web, and some of the sites can be visited without too much trouble. Visitors from all over the world come here, some to remember fallen comrades, some to prove to themselves the truth about that which happened here. A few survivors from that time remain, their stories are harrowing.
